OK so I was trying to make my rendition of “Spectra” (see this QuickNote for the idea I had and then this research page for Atom Tone for the work of someone with a similar idea, and then this page for the actual project), in PureData, and was trying to figure out how to add reverb.

So I was trying to figure that out, and I first saw PD-Extended’s freeverb~, but PD-Extended is now abandoned, so I didn’t want to use that. Then this thing called “Erbe-Verb” kept coming up as the best reverb, and I thought I’d check it out.

I then discovered that the actual Erbe-Verb physical module (a beautiful thing being sold on a very cool website) was $489, and that mostly people using PureData were excited about these talks the creator Tom Erbe had given. Tom Erbe turned out to be so cool that he now has his own page on this site, which has more fun stuff he’s made and also some educational materials on computer music.

BUT BACK TO THE ERBE VERB! As I understand it, the reverb itself is built using PureData which is amazing, and although I have yet to find a patch for it you can see a video of the physical module working and how much it can do:

Anyway, I might revisit this page after doing more research, but Erbe and the MAT program at UCSB are now added to my personal heroes.
