It looks absolutely amazing though and I’m still searching for a place even vaguely like it on the East Coast. This was a magazine about academia which seems interesting and ran from 1990 to 2001. I found out about it listening to the Longform episode with Masha Gessen who wrote for it at one point. Interestingly, Aaron Swartz pulled it into a mirror archive when he was 19 in December 2005 which is availible here: http://linguafranca.mirror.theinfo.org/ This was how I discovered https://theinfo.org.
Information is power. But like all power, there are those who want to keep it for themselves. The world’s entire scientific and cultural heritage, published over centuries in books and journals, is increasingly being digitized and locked up by a handful of private corporations. Want to read the papers featuring the most famous results of the sciences? You’ll need to send enormous amounts to publishers like Reed Elsevier. There are those struggling to change this....
I haven’t been super happy about the idea of living in a metaverse world, I’ll be totally honest. I mean, I like designing the spaces I live in and sometimes wish that my computer felt more like an environment that I create (I would give a lot to have a Material You style UI for my laptop), but I really don’t like the sort of video game uncanny valley environments....
OK so I was trying to make my rendition of “Spectra” (see this QuickNote for the idea I had and then this research page for Atom Tone for the work of someone with a similar idea, and then this page for the actual project), in PureData, and was trying to figure out how to add reverb. So I was trying to figure that out, and I first saw PD-Extended’s freeverb~, but PD-Extended is now abandoned, so I didn’t want to use that....
I heard about this on 99% Invisible’s episode “The Smell of Concrete After Rain” (which also included a discussion of Boston’s City Hall and changed my perspective on brutalist architecture – a label which notably is unrelated to the word “brutal”) and really love it. It’s nicely presented on a page here. Also the design group Petagram made a beautiful version of it here. In case that link breaks, I’ve copied it and you can see that here....

This is a project I really really really love. They took pictures of New York City landmarks and comped them into other landscapes, and then wrote stories about them. It’s incredibly well done, gorgeous, and makes me so so happy. I even love the illustrations they’ve done for the index at the bottom of the page. And all of it is presented on a beautiful and incredibly thematic website. It’s perfect....
I had come up with this idea “Spectra” for a series of songs based on the emission spectra of different elements and also light sources (see here for the original QuickNote, although the idea was in my notebook before that…), and as I was trying to figure out how to convert a waveform image to audio I found someone who had a similar idea and made something really cool: https://www.jiri-suchanek.net/en/project/atom-tone/...
