A History of The Art of Research

Erbe Verb

Tom Erbe

OK so I was trying to make my rendition of “Spectra” (see this QuickNote for the idea I had and then this research page for Atom Tone for the work of someone with a similar idea, and then this page for the actual project), in PureData, and was trying to figure out how to add reverb. So I was trying to figure that out, and I first saw PD-Extended’s freeverb~, but PD-Extended is now abandoned, so I didn’t want to use that....

Spectra

Dec. 2021

OK so this is an idea I initially came up with while sitting through an ETC Representative’s promotional lecture in my DRAM 204 Lighting Class on December 22 2021. Here was my notebook page from that day: The idea is basically what is outlined there, but I’ll summarize it here because that handwriting is hard to read I suppose. The Idea: Take the emission spectra of a light source like a CFL or a normal lightbulb, or of an elment like hydrogen, and turn those representations of light into sound....

Machine Project

Dec. 2021

https://machineproject.com/ The Machine Project was this space in LA that sadly died in 2018. It looks absolutely amazing though and I’m still searching for a place even vaguely like it on the East Coast. Here’s a poster titled What is the Machine Project? 1 I mean, just look at the intro animation on their site: Another favorite: check out the Alvarado Caverns and Mystery Theater thing that ran there....

Tom Erbe

Tom Erbe

I started off with a page on Erbe-Verb, which (obviously) Erbe had created, and the more I looked the more I felt like I wanted to keep more information on his work around, so we’re making a Tom Erbe page. It’s the first biography page on this site! Related On BLIMPtwo: Erbe-Verb - An amazing reverb Erbe created. Spectra - The project I was working on that led me to finding out about Erbe in the first place....

Atom Tone

Jiří Suchánek

I had come up with this idea “Spectra” for a series of songs based on the emission spectra of different elements and also light sources (see here for the original QuickNote, although the idea was in my notebook before that…), and as I was trying to figure out how to convert a waveform image to audio I found someone who had a similar idea and made something really cool: https://www.jiri-suchanek.net/en/project/atom-tone/...

Arts Culture & Technology Program - MIT

Dec. 2021

https://act.mit.edu/ Shit it seems really cool. Part of the School of Architecture & Planning at MIT which also is the umbrella for the Media Lab, and sort of the “separated-at-birth more artistic sibling” of the Media Lab.

Misanthropist Stool

Jan. 2022 ·  Mengyu Chen

I was leafing through the UCSB MAT program website and checking out some of the students' work there, and randomly clicked on Mengyu Chen’s website. He mostly seems to do things with VR and AR, but I really loved some of his work on “Objects”, particularly the “Misanthropist”. https://www.mengyuchen.com/object/Misanthropist It’s a stool that runs away from you. The video really helps to illustrate it. It’s not perfect, but I think it a brilliant project....

Media Arts and Technology Program - UCSB

UCSB MAT

This is a page solely devoted to the Media Arts and Technology program at the University of California Santa Barbara. I found out about the program when trying to find more information on Erbe-Verb and its creator Tom Erbe, and the more I look at it the cooler it seems. Just read their about blurb: Media Arts and Technology (MAT) at UCSB is a transdisciplinary graduate program that fuses emergent media, computer science, engineering, electronic music and digital art research, practice, production, and theory....
